Russell Kebble: 5 August 2005
Russell's subject was a square platter turned and shaped using steam. Russell demonstrated and
explained the problems and dangers of turning a square object.
Unfortunately the turning was not completed to his usual high standard as a lot of hand sanding
is involved with these items. Some of his completed work was on display to show the finish
normally obtained.
Russell then showed us his method of shaping the platters using steam. He used an old boiler
(baby berco) and the piece was allowed to steam for about an hour. When removed from the
steamer it was easily bent to the required shape and held in place with a belt (Russell assured us
his trousers wouldn’t fall down!). A very interesting demonstration.
